Gynecologic Conditions

There are a number of GYN conditions which can be severely impactful to a woman’s health. Some of these include uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, endometriosis, and recurring vaginal infections. Uterine fibroids, for example, are very common but almost always benign/non-cancerous tumors of the muscle tissue of the uterus (womb). Fibroids can cause very heavy and painful periods, and are a frequent reason that women choose to have a hysterectomy, a major surgery to remove the uterus. Similarly, endometriosis is a benign condition that results from the presence of tissue normally lining the inside of the uterus in various locations outside the uterus, such as the pelvis or the ovaries. Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose and often requires surgery to do so. Having either of these conditions can result in a decreased quality of life, frequent emergency department visits, and missed days of work.
Successfully addressing any of these problems requires a thorough evaluation with careful history-taking, a comprehensive physical examination, laboratory and radiologic tests, followed by an in-depth discussion of results and next steps in management. It is just as important for patients to be educated about their health as it is for their providers to be knowledgeable. It is this combination that allows for an excellent partnership-based approach to improving women’s health.
